Save Thousands with the Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Cheaper Home Batteries Rebates Reducing from 1 May 2026

The Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Programme has helped thousands of Australians install solar batteries at a significantly reduced cost. Currently, eligible households and small businesses can access rebates averaging around $330 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity.

From 1 May 2026, rebates will drop by up to 88%, particularly for larger battery systems. This could mean thousands of dollars in lost savings if you wait. For example, a 25 kWh battery system could cost approximately $2,657 more once the rebate reduces, while a 40kWh battery could cost around $6,500 more. Rebates will then continue to decrease every 6 months.

With rebates decreasing and demand increasing, now is the time to secure your installation and lock in the highest available discount before it is scaled back.

How the Rebate Works

To access the current rebate level, your battery system must be installed and eligible before the reduction takes effect on 1 May 2026. Booking early is essential to ensure your system is installed in time and you do not miss out on the higher incentive.

With strong demand expected ahead of the rebate drop, installation spots are filling quickly. Acting now gives you the best chance to secure both your system and the maximum available savings through the Cheaper Home Batteries Programme.

What Can You Save?

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program delivers a substantial reduction in upfront battery costs while unlocking long-term energy savings. With rebate levels set to change from 1 May 2026, eligible households and businesses installing before this date can access the current, more generous incentive levels.

Here’s what you can expect:

With rebates gradually tapering over time, installing sooner may help maximise your savings.

Cheaper Home Batteries Program FAQ

Home battery storage allows you to store excess solar energy generated during the day for use in the evening, when electricity prices are highest. This helps you reduce your reliance on the grid and protect yourself from rising energy costs.

To access the current rebate level, your battery system must be installed and eligible before the reduction takes effect on 1 May 2026. Booking early is essential to ensure your system is installed in time and you do not miss out on the higher incentive.

To qualify for the rebate, your battery must be compatible with a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). A VPP is a coordinated network of batteries that can help stabilise the grid by supplying energy during peak demand or outages.

You don’t need to join a VPP, but having a VPP-capable battery ensures future flexibility. It’s a step toward building a smarter, decentralised energy system where everyday households contribute to grid stability and energy efficiency.
