The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is the Federal Government’s latest push to accelerate renewable energy uptake and make solar batteries more accessible to Australians. Through a $2.3 billion expansion of the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, it offers up to 30% off the cost of installing home battery systems for households, small businesses and community facilities.
Participants can receive up to $372 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity, averaging around $330 per kWh after admin fees. That means a typical 10 kWh battery could cost about $3,300 less. The rebate will gradually decrease each year until the scheme ends in 2030.
With a goal of over one million battery installations, the program is set to cut power bills, strengthen the grid, and help more Australians make the most of rooftop solar. Now is the time to start planning your installation.
While the program officially begins July 1 2025, batteries installed earlier are still eligible as long as they aren’t switched on until that date. This allows early adopters to secure a system with Think Renewable ahead of time and avoid expected backlogs.
Due to strong demand, it’s wise to start now. Our installers may book out quickly, so acting early will give you the best chance to secure both your system and your savings.
The rebate delivers a substantial reduction in upfront battery costs while unlocking long-term energy savings. Here’s what eligible households and businesses can expect:
Save an average of $4,000-$5,000 on battery installation costs
Reduce annual energy bills by up to 90% when combined with solar
Lower electricity costs by an estimated $1,100 per year for homes with existing solar
Improve energy independence and reduce exposure to peak-time pricing
Support a cleaner energy grid and benefit from advances in battery technology
Whether you own a house, operate a small business, or manage a local community centre, you may be able to benefit. To qualify for the rebate, your system must:
Be a new battery system between 5 and 50 kWh of usable capacity
Be installed by a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited installer
Be connected to a new or existing rooftop solar system
Be VPP-ready (Virtual Power Plant capable), though participation is not required
Include only new equipment (not second-hand or refurbished)
Be eligible even if installed off-grid, provided the battery is VPP-capable
Home battery storage allows you to store excess solar energy generated during the day for use in the evening, when electricity prices are highest. This helps you reduce your reliance on the grid and protect yourself from rising energy costs.
Although the rebate officially starts on July 1, 2025, you don’t need to wait to install your battery system. Installations completed before this date are still eligible as long as the battery is not switched on until the program begins.
Batteries installed after July 1 will receive the rebate at the time of installation. The rebate amount will gradually reduce each year until the scheme ends in 2030. Due to expected high demand, it’s recommended to act early to avoid delays and secure a quality installer.
Yes, the federal battery rebate can be combined with state and territory incentives, depending on your location. Some areas, like New South Wales and Western Australia already offer rebates that could be used alongside the federal scheme.
Combining programs can lead to significant additional savings, although it may require some extra paperwork. It’s worth checking the latest guidelines for your state and discussing options with your installer.
To qualify for the rebate, your battery must be compatible with a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). A VPP is a coordinated network of batteries that can help stabilise the grid by supplying energy during peak demand or outages.
You don’t need to join a VPP, but having a VPP-capable battery ensures future flexibility. It’s a step toward building a smarter, decentralised energy system where everyday households contribute to grid stability and energy efficiency.
Start by requesting quotes from Clean Energy Council–accredited installers – like Think Renewable! You can choose to install a battery system now and delay switching it on until July 1, or schedule your installation closer to the program’s launch.
If you don’t yet have solar, consider installing a rooftop system with Think Renewable now, and speak to us about adding a battery in the future. Establishing a relationship with a reliable installer now means you’ll be better placed to move quickly and secure your rebate when the time comes.
